In Spain, plans are underway to make a whole Lord of the Rings themed tourist destination with a lot of the communities, people, and craftsmenship unique to Tolkien's creation. It will be located in the Sierra Norte, a shire formed by 42 municipalities placed in the most Northern triangle of the Community of Madrid. The creators say:
"It was discovered that a map of the area, when superimposed on a map of Middle Earth, revealed a similarity of sixty per cent of the topography, i.e.: mountains in the same places, names which bear close resemblance, also rivers and forests. This caused us to seriously consider the possibility of recreating a miniature landscape of Middle Earth in the region, whereby a study team was formed, and technical experts consulted with a view to investigating further the viablity of this idea."
The Middle Earth "habitat" will include themed towns. Within the precints of the little theme-hotel the visitor will experience
again the feelings which he or she had when reading the work itself or while watching the film, but this time in a direct and physical form, to actually be there, an inhabitant of Middle Earth and a subject of King Elessar. Each theme-town will also act as a centre of education on the nature of the locality, it’s flora and fauna, and will also make and sell products natural to the theme and the locality, and show and teach how they are made. Each product to carry the Official Seal Of Quality. The visitor will be able to book for a period to stay in a little theme-hotel, where he or she will dress, for example, as an Elf, and will live (and behave!) as one for the duration of the stay. He or she, in the form of an Elf, Dwarve, Hobbit, or Man (or woman) of the period, may also book a packet-voyage to undertake the complete Journey of the Ring, or a part thereof. The visitor’s stay may also consist of courses in Farming School, Elvish or other workshops, wood-craftsmanship, archery, Hobbit weddings, horse riding and care of horses with the Rohirrim, study of trees in Lothlorien,
watch the dawn come up in Rivendell, go to Bilbo and Frodo’s birthday party, and many other activities which will never be forgotten.
