Here's how this works:
This forum is based on the works of Phillip Pullman. He is the author of The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass.
The books start out, at the Jordan College in Concord. Your threads do NOT have to take place here. In his books, Pullman creates a thousand different worlds, making the setting of your threads almost totally random.
The main charactor, Lyra, comes from a world of Daemons.
What are daemon?
Daemon are creatures that are attached to you. Not physically attached. The bond that holds you together cannot be seen. This bond allows your daemon 6-10 feet of space between you two. Any further and you both suffer physical and emotional pain.
Everyone is born with a daemon partner. When you are young, your daemon changes shape. It can turn into any animal it wishes to protect, comfort or play with you. (ex: bear, frog, lion, cat, badger). They are like the pet you always wanted (if you ever wanted a pet). They have the power to speak to you. Your daemon is usually the opposite sex of yourself. There are people who have same sex daemon, but they are rare, and you hardly ever see it (hence why I said rare). Your daemon feels your pain, and you feel his/her pain. Why? Because your daemon is your soul in physical form. So if it dies, you die. Take care of them!
Do I have to have a daemon?
No, like I said before, there are different worlds with different races.
What kinds of races?
a.)Gallivespian spies
b.)Angels (serving under Enoch)
c.)Cliff-Ghasts
d.)Witches(must be female unless your playing Will)
e.)Harpies
f.)Mulefa
g.)Armored Bears
h.)People like us!(lol)
i.)Ghosts (yes, from the world of the dead)
^The only people out of these groups who get Daemon, are the witches. Oh yeah, the whole 'people like us' thing, I find very boring. You basically live in 'our' world, with no daemon partner, or anything else. You can only travel to other worlds, with Will's knife (with no one can have, because it is Wills knife).
If you have gotten pass the password protection, I seriously advise that you READ the first book
